Computer Aided Design

CAD is mainly used for detailed engineering of 3D models and/or 2D drawings of physical components, but it is also used throughout the engineering process from conceptual design and layout of products, through strength and dynamic analysis of assemblies to definition of manufacturing methods of components.

Photoshop: An image editing software developed and manufactured by Adobe Systems Inc

Microsoft Word (often called Word) is a graphical word processing program that users can type with. It is made by the computer company Microsoft. The purpose of the MS Word is to allow the users to type and save documents. Similar to other word processors, it has helpful tools to make documents

Autodesk Revit is building information modeling software for architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, designers and contractors. It allows users to design a building and structure and its components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and access building information from the building model's database. Revit is 4D BIM capable with tools to plan and track various stages in the building's lifecycle, from concept to construction and later demolition.

Use and Implementation

Revit can be used as a very powerful collaboration tool between different disciplines in the building design sphere. The different disciplines that use Revit approach the program from unique perspectives. Each of these perspectives is focused on completing that discipline's task. Companies that adopt the software first examine the existing work flow process to determine if such an elaborate collaboration tool is required.

Autodesk Inventor, developed by U.S.-based software company Autodesk, is a computer-aided design application for creating 3D digital prototypes used in the design, visualization and simulation of products. It uses ShapeManager, their proprietary geometric modeling kernel.
Inventor includes an integrated motion simulation and assembly stress analysis environment. Users can input driving loads, friction characteristics, and dynamic components, then run dynamic simulation tests to see how a product will work under real-world conditions. The simulation tools can help users optimize strength and weight, identify high-stress areas, identify and reduce unwanted vibrations, and size motors and actuators to reduce energy consumption. Finite element analysis (FEA) lets users validate component design by testing how parts perform under loads (using actual load information instead of estimates).

What is the difference between Autodesk Inventor, Autodesk Revit, AutoCad, Photoshop, and Microsoft Word?

Autodesk Inventor, is a computer-aided design application for creating 3D digital prototypes used in the design, visualization and simulation of products. Autodesk Revit is building information modeling software for architects, structural engineers, MEP engineers, designers and contractors. Autocad is mainly used for detailed engineering of 3D models and/or 2D drawings of physical components. All of these programs are used for design, but are used different people or career types.
Photoshop is mainly used for editing images. Microsoft Word is a graphical word processing program that users can type with to make word documents.

Compare and Contrast the Engineering Design Process with the Scientific Method

Main Difference between the two =
Iteration is the act of repeating a process with the aim of approaching a desired goal, target or result. It is also known as Amiration. Each repetition of the process is also called an "iteration", and the results of one iteration are used as the starting point for the next iteration.

Know these definitions:

con·straint
kənˈstrānt/

Review Power Tools.  Write the down the tool and function of each tool.
Corded Hammer Drills. Most corded drills will have at least two basic settings - normal and hammer. This allows the drill to be used on a range of materials such as natural woods, manmade boards, metals, masonry, brick and stone.

Cordless Drills. Most cordless drills are powerful enough to drill even tough materials like stone and masonry.

SDS (Special Direct System) Drills are extremely powerful and used when extra power is required, for heavy duty jobs. They have three basic functions that allow normal drilling, hammer action and chiselling.

Power screwdrivers.
Power screwdrivers are used especially if a large number of screws need to be fixed in position.

a machine plane is used if a large amount of wood needs removing or the piece is very long, using a smoothing plane or jack plane is time consuming and can be inaccurate

Sheet sanders are used to sand / smooth wood surfaces although they can be used to sand / smooth materials such as plastics and metals as well.

Palm sanders are extremely useful tools and they fit into the palm of one hand comfortably. They are relatively light, easy to control and cheap. The glasspaper sheet is normally fixed to the pad with velcro and this means that it can be replaced easily.

Machine routers are extremely versatile machines. They are generally used to cut grooves in natural wood and manmade boards

Jigsaws are general cutting and shaping tools. They are provided with a selection of blades suitable for cutting and shaping a range of materials. They are ideal for cutting thin manmade boards such as plywood and MDF and they are capable of cutting detailed curves.

Circular saws are used for cutting woods to size . They are extremely powerful and dangerous if used incorrectly.

Table circular saws are used for cutting woods to size . They are extremely powerful and dangerous if used incorrectly

The Disk Sander is used to smooth materials such as woods and plastics. It is also used to remove small amounts of waste material. It is a dangerous machine if safety is ignored.

If you wanted to drill a hole with wood, what tool would you use?

A  Corded Hammer Drill

Define:
Torsion: torsion is the twisting of an object due to an applied torque.

Shear a strain in the structure of a substance produced by pressure, when its layers are laterally shifted in relation to each other.
Compression the application of balanced inward ("pushing") forces to different points on a material or structure
Tension tension from the two opposing teams pulling on an object. This force also acts on bridge structures, resulting in tensional stress

Define : Drag, Thrust, Lift, and Gravity

Drag: drag is the sum of all the aerodynamic or hydrodynamic forces in the direction of the external fluid flow. It therefore acts to oppose the motion of the object, and in a powered vehicle it is overcome by thrust.

Thrust: a reaction force described quantitatively by Newton's second and third laws. When a system expels or accelerates mass in one direction, the accelerated mass will cause a force of equal magnitude but opposite direction on that system.

Lift: Upward-acting force on an aircraft wing or airfoil.

Gravity: the force of attraction between all masses in the universe

The Scientific Method vs. The Engineering Method

As you can see both methods are very similar. Both include constructing or finding a problem to solve, testing the solution, and communicating one's results. The main difference between the two is that Iteration is the act of repeating a process with the aim of approaching a desired goal, target or result. It is also known as Amiration. Each repetition of the process is also called an "iteration", and the results of one iteration are used as the starting point for the next iteration. Their similarities include that both are used to test designs.

2.3 Tower Report

I do believe that my group's tower was a decent overall design. I will admit that it does need corrections and a little but more thought. It needed a little more structure in order to hold the required load. Our tower was appealing, and could "fit in" in a modern real world setting. When I researched skyscrapers for ideas, I noticed most of them were appealing and some were pleasantly outrageous. They where wacky, but they were  balanced. Overall, our tower was appealing and  able to stand. If we had put  a little more supporting structure I believe it would have held the required load.

New Year's Resolution

New Year's Resolution

My New Year's Resolutions for this class includes maintaining a perfect grade by the end of the second semester, as well as improving my critical thinking skills. My New Year's Resolutions over all, include becoming a better person and honing my artistic skill.  By the end of this year I want to see improvement in my drawing ability. The better I get at drawing and art over all, the more likely I am to be accepted into SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) as well as a few other colleges that I am interested in.
